Re: Pass kept but...
Stupid sod has destroyed the bus industry. 20% cut, which will mean most marginal services will be gone, and bearing in mind fuel keeps going up , and we have a VAT increase in January, so that will mean the true percentage cut is at least 22.5%

20% cut? I thought it was extra investment.
Edit: Nevermind, just found a PDF on the stuff in more detail and found what you're on about. That's FC out of the window then

So what`s the result of all these cuts when all said and done?
I take it will mean early morning and late night journeys will be gone.

Another one that pisses me off is the foreign aid thing. Yeah okay, morally yes it is important. But in times like these when the country is near bankrupcy, screw other countries, we need to be saving our own arses first! And they have the cheek to not only keep it at the current level, but to continue INCREASING it!

K1, I think the cuts could easily go further than that mate. Bus ops have just lost a huge chunk of their income. It basically means a litre of diesel has gone up 20% for ops...

I wouldn't say so much if we were well off as a country, but we're not. Even before the recession they always used to whine that they didn't have the money when they were asked for something, but if it's for another country ohh no they're happy to pay out then!
Yeah, as if it wasn't bad enough in the first place.

Re: Pass kept but...
At least the bus compaines have over a year to make the cuts
Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG)
From 2012/13, DfT plans to make a reduction in the subsidy paid to bus operators by reducing the rate at which subsidy is paid by 20%. The incentives for smartcards, low carbon buses and automatic vehicle location will be maintained.
The current non-statutory arrangements that enable long distance coach operators to claim BSOG in return for offering a half price concession to older and disabled people will be ended by October 2011, although the industry may wish to continue to offer this on a commercial basis. This does not in any way affect the statutory national concession which offers free travel on local bus services throughout England.
We are considering options for the long-term future distribution of bus subsidy and will make an announcement in due course.

Cuts mean job loses though...This Co-elition goverment needs to go immediately. I notice the cuts for rail aren't nearly as drastic..

If they want to save yet more money, get rid of the Welsh assembly, and Scottish Parliament, as basically all they are is a pair of quangos, with no real power.

The cash they get is only a small scratch of their operating costs.

The damage has been done with rail. First/keolis running 2 or 3 carriges right across the country on intercity routes - overcrowding, refurbished HSTs from the late 70's running down to London and an ancient infrasturucture. It is bad enough as is.
The bus industry seemed to be getting on ok though, so now it is their turn. Remove any profit to be had from the industry, drain the companies of money and then force them to buy new vehicles.

I've noticed a few trains lately are now painted in plain yellow and have the Network Rail logo on them rather than First Great Western or Arriva.

Re: Pass kept but...
They are not passenger trains. They are Network Fail's measuring trains, and they have at least 1 HST set

Ah, I see. Not seen them before so wasn't sure... saw two within a week, one was a HST and the other was a smaller two piece. I can't think of the name, been out of them for years.

They seem to go through a lot of power cars, because at least 2 of them are now part of the Grand Central fleet
