Why do they think the next bus will be cheaper?
Once had a woman get on my bus during morning peak time and ask for a day rider. I states the price of £4.00 for a peak time ticket. She starts fumbling in her purse so I makes the mistake of printing the ticket out. The woman only puts down £3.20 though, the price of an off peak ticket. I tells her that she needs another 80p as the ticket is £4 due to it being peak time.
This bloody woman goes ballistic and starts saying that she only paid £3.20 the day before and that I was trying to rip her off, blah blah blah. So I points out to her that it is 8.15am on a Wednesday and that until 9.30am, Monday to Friday, day riders are dearer. She wouldn't have it and said that she was going to wait for the next bus. Fair enough, but the next driver will just say the same thing!!!

I remember when I was filling out the brown envelope in the canteen. Another driver picked up the cancelled ticket and asked why I'd printed it. "Oh." I said "Some silly c*nt didn't realise they were dearer before 9.30am and refused to pay for it."
"Silly c*nt!!" The other driver said in shock. "You can't say things like that! You're a lady!"
"Fuck off mate, I'm a bloody bus driver not some frigging shrinking violet!!"

I've it both sides. Trying to explain why the 'regional bus and train' was more than he usually paid. In the end he wanted the off peak ticket to use from the train station and pay his £9 for that than the £14 for the peak ticket, but I told him I couldn't issue it until after 0930, and it was now 0845. He'd have to pay me after 0930, then also he'd have to pay his £2 to get into town too and then pay for the off peak ticket.
I even called in on the radio and their first question was if i had the fares booklet with me, I did but it wasn't listed in it. I even went into the office later and their comment was 'oh, its always been in there before'. The guy eventually paid for a peak bus ticket into town and was going to sort it out at the train station.
But also have had passengers with a handful of change drop it into the shute for a particular ticket, price quoted, but on checking before issuing the ticket it is £1 or £2 short, where they have held it back with one finger or something but I've already issued the ticket.
So now I wait, if I'm late, well, sod it. I'm always late anyway...
