EYMS launch new express route Empty EYMS launch new express route

routeONE magazine A brand new express bus route between Gilberdyke, Elloughton, Brough and Hull has been launched by East Yorkshire Motor Services, providing the quickest-ever bus journeys from the Brough area into the heart of Hull.

The route also goes through the city centre rather than direct to the Interchange with all journeys passing Princes Quay and peak time journeys serving the Guildhall and Hull College. Scheduled time for the 13 miles between Brough and the city centre is under 35 minutes, cutting up to 13 minutes off the time taken by the long-established 155 route which serves other villages on the way.

The ‘PETUARIA EXPRESS’ will initially provide ten return journeys on Mondays to Fridays but the company says that if successful it will certainly consider increasing the service.

The journeys are carefully timed to suit commuters working in Hull and journeys between the peaks should prove ideal for shoppers. The route also passes Hull Royal Infirmary so should also be good for hospital staff and visitors.

EYMS claims that from the centre of Brough to the centre of Hull the bus will be as quick if not quicker than the train allowing for walking times to Brough station and from Hull Paragon Station to the Old Town area. At just £5 return and £20.50 for a weekly ticket the fares also compare favourably with the train especially if station parking costs are added. Even a comparison with the car is good when rising fuel costs and city car park charges are taken into account. Leaflets delivered to every house Brough and Elloughton and available from shops and council offices locally also include a £2.50 voucher so that people can try the new route for half price.

The population of Brough and Elloughton has expanded a great deal recently with more houses still being built, and the new route is the first significant improvement in public transport provision in the area for many years and is designed to cater for the growing population, many of whom work or shop in Hull.

The route is ‘branded’ on a Roman theme, reflecting the fact that Brough was a significant Roman settlement called Petuaria, and the new route coincides with the 1600th anniversary of the year the Romans finally left Britain in 410AD. The name is in common use in Brough with the council service centre, council newspaper, local drama group and a local road all bearing the Petuaria name.

EYMS has just taken delivery of six new Volvo B7RLE buses with Wrightbus Eclipse Urban bodies. Two of these have been given a very eye-catching livery for the route incorporating the Roman theme but also based on the traditional EYMS colours of indigo and primrose which were originally used by the Lee and Beulah company which was based in Elloughton and was one of the companies from which EYMS was formed in 1926.

The other four are in the standard EYMS colours and will be used on routes in Hull.

Chairman Peter Shipp said “I travelled to and from work on the new route today and the other passengers all said how much they welcomed the new quicker route. The signs are very encouraging even in the first three days. As to the buses, we had no new buses in the budget for this year due to the financial situation which I blame fairly and squarely on the concessionary travel scheme and fuel and fuel duty costs, but a good deal was available on these stock buses from Volvo so we decided to take them. With our significant investments in the last few years we are well-placed to meet the DDA deadlines so we can afford a slight lull in deliveries but we certainly hope to resume bigger orders next year.”

I notice he hates the free Muppet scheme. It is time all the operators got together and told the arseholes in Whitehall to shove the free OAP scheme up their arse and simply refuse to accept their passes. They are all private companies, and if they all refused the passes, the government wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Brough to Hull isn't that far. The X62 makes sod all to be honest and required coach spec vehicles fitted with tachographs, and drivers on EU rules. Notice Shippy also used the service himself....

IIRC its a mixture of 53 plate President bodied Tridents and ELC bodied Volvo Olys. Not sure if coaches still appear on it.

Stagecoach Hull use anything they can get their hands on, and it is rarely full. Seen bus spec ex Manchester President/Tridents on their often enough, plus former Road Car Volvo Olympians. Regular performers are worn smooth ex Skeggy-Lincoln B7TL/ELCB's.

I have used the service in the past myself, and I didn't find it that well patronised.
