The Traffic Commissioner for Scotland has fined a Renfrew bus operator £1,500 and blocked any expansion of the business - except for any that reflects a joining of forces with a second company - for nine months.

Joan Aitken called Colchri Ltd of Westway Development, Renfrew, to a Public Inquiry in Edinburgh on 12 March, 2010.

The inquiry heard unchallenged evidence from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport officers that they had received a complaint that Colchri may be operating two unregistered early morning services. Monitoring of the company's operations from Silverburn bus station confirmed this.

Further monitoring showed that the services continued to operate after the company had sent a letter on 5 February calling them to a public inquiry to look into the complaint.

SPT plans senior staff shake-up

Scotland's largest transport authority is considering a shake-up of senior staff in a bid to save cash.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport will vote later this week on plans to cut the number of senior posts from 11 to seven - saving £110,000.

BBC Scotland understands the move is part of a wider restructuring which could affect overall staff numbers.

SPT employs about 700 people and is believed to view its own management structure as too top heavy.

On Friday, the authority will be asked to back proposals to reduce its number of directors from eight to four.

This could see the incumbent directors of communication, property, policy and strategy and human resources taking up "revised senior posts".

The director of bus operations post, vacant after an internal promotion, will not be filled.

'Streamline management'

SPT chief executive Gordon Maclennan said: "These proposals are subject to on going employee consultation and of course agreement by our personnel committee on Friday.

"The plans are based on our decision to streamline the management structure against an expected future reduction in public service funding.

"The proposals for re-structuring reflect SPT's focus on meeting the needs of our customers."

Last month SPT approved plans for a £290m revamp of Glasgow's ageing Subway system.

The authority will ask the Scottish government for an additional £5m a year in funding for the first decade of a 30-year investment programme.

The proposed changes would require a 25% reduction in the system's 350-strong workforce.
