Wednesday 9th June 2010 as Wizard Wednesday

A Facebook petition set up by students from Manchester universities, in a bid to make Magic Bus drivers wear wizard costumes and supported by nearly 11,000 fans, has come to the attention of Manchester bus firm Stagecoach Manchester.

As a result, the company is “unofficially” renaming Wednesday 9th June 2010 as Wizard Wednesday and some of Manchester’s Magic Bus drivers will be donning their pointy hats and cloaks before getting behind the wheel.

Wizard Wednesday is also coinciding with the launch of Stagecoach Manchester’s partnership with Everyman – the prostate and testicular cancer campaign – as its Charity of the Year 2010. Throughout the day, wizards will be collecting donations for the worthwhile charity, and every penny raised will be put towards helping to fund life saving research.

Prostate cancer is now the number one cancer affecting men, with more than 35,000 men diagnosed in the UK every year. Testicular cancer primarily affects younger men aged between 15 and 44 and it is 99 per cent curable if detected early enough.

Mark Threapleton, managing director of Stagecoach Manchester, said: “We became aware of the petition a few months ago and thought it was such a fantastic idea, that we really wanted to make it happen. We listen to our customers and whenever possible, we try to turn their thoughts and ideas into reality.

“We are also delighted that we could use it to celebrate the launch of our partnership with Everyman and help raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer and we want to encourage as many people as possible to join in the fun on Wizard Wednesday.”
